“Hello, may I speak to the owner of the house please?”
“This is he, ma'am. How may I help you?”
“I just want to ask you one personal question, sir, for a survey I am conducting for the ________ foundation.”
“Sure, I am always open to surveys.”
“Okay, great. The question I'd like to ask you relates to this past year. What is the one thing you regret the most about 2002, and how are you going to change that this year?”
“Wow… Hmm, so many things have happened this year it will be hard to pick just one.”
He pauses for a moment to think.
“I think the thing I regret the most is some of the abusive relationships I've been in. I'd like to break that pattern by reducing my need for people. And try to be more content with myself. Yeah, I think that is the reason why I think I 'need' people; my self esteem problems. I guess I seem to think if I find love in other people they'll help me love myself. I'd like to change that.”
There was silence on the other end.
“Hello? Are you still there?”
“Oh, yes. I am here.”
“What's wrong? Is that not what you were looking for?”
“No, it's just that our records show that that is what you said last year.”
